Maine Coon Kitten Growth Week by Week
At Townhill Maine Coons we carefully monitor our kittens’ growth and development from the moment they are born. Each week brings new milestones, from their first tiny movements to the confident, playful kittens that eventually join their forever families.
This timeline explains what typically happens during the early weeks of life and how we support our kittens through every stage of their development.

Monitoring weight during the first weeks of life is one of the most important parts of caring for newborn kittens. Regular weighing helps breeders and owners ensure that kittens are feeding well, growing steadily, and developing as expected. Healthy kittens should gain weight every day, and a lack of weight gain can often be one of the earliest signs that something may be wrong.
To make this easier, we have created a simple tool that allows you to track newborn kitten weights and compare them with suggested growth ranges. You can use our kitten weight tracker to record daily weights, monitor progress, and keep an organised record of each kitten’s development during the neonatal stage.
Week 1 – The Newborn Stage
During the first week of life, Maine Coon kittens are completely dependent on their mother. They are born with their eyes and ears closed and rely entirely on scent and touch to find warmth and nourishment.
At Townhill we:
-
weigh each kitten daily to ensure steady weight gain
-
carefully monitor nursing to make sure every kitten is feeding well
-
keep the nesting area warm, quiet and secure
-
observe mum closely to ensure she is comfortable and relaxed with her litter.
Healthy kittens will spend most of their time sleeping and feeding, which is essential for building strength in these first critical days.
Week 2 – Eyes Begin to Open
Around the second week, kittens begin experiencing the world for the first time. Their eyes slowly start to open and their hearing begins to develop.
At Townhill this is when we:
-
continue daily weight checks to monitor healthy development
-
begin gentle, brief handling to introduce human scent and touch
-
observe each kitten’s progress carefully.
All kittens are born with blue eyes, which will gradually change colour as they grow.
Although their senses are beginning to develop, kittens are still very dependent on their mother at this stage.
Week 3 – First Little Steps
By the third week, the kittens start becoming much more active. They begin attempting their first wobbly steps and start interacting with their littermates.
At this stage we:
-
increase gentle daily handling to support early socialisation
-
ensure the nest area remains safe as kittens begin moving around
-
observe the kittens’ coordination and development.
Their ears begin to stand upright and their tiny baby teeth begin forming under the gums. This stage is often when we start to see the first glimpses of each kitten’s personality.
Week 4 – Early Exploration and Weaning
At four weeks old the kittens become noticeably more curious and playful. Their coordination improves and they begin exploring their surroundings with confidence.
At Townhill we begin introducing:
-
high-quality kitten food alongside mum’s milk
-
shallow litter trays to start learning litter habits
-
safe areas for gentle exploration.
Play behaviour also begins to develop during this stage, helping kittens learn important social skills through interaction with their littermates.
Weeks 5–6 – Socialisation and Learning
These weeks are incredibly important for behavioural development. Kittens become much more energetic and playful, learning boundaries and communication through play with their siblings.
At Townhill our focus during this stage is on:
-
daily positive interaction with people
-
gentle exposure to normal household sounds and environments
-
continued support for healthy eating and litter habits.
Play during this stage helps kittens learn bite inhibition and social cues, which are essential skills for their future lives.
Weeks 7–8 – Personalities Begin to Shine
By seven to eight weeks old, kittens are confident explorers. They run, jump and climb with increasing coordination and curiosity.
At Townhill we:
-
continue encouraging positive interaction with people
-
observe temperament and personality traits
-
ensure the kittens are confident in a home environment.
This is often the stage when their individual personalities become very clear. Some kittens are adventurous and playful, while others may be more relaxed and affectionate.
Weeks 9–10 – Veterinary Care Begins
Around nine to ten weeks of age, our kittens begin an important stage of their health care.
At Townhill this includes:
-
their first veterinary health check
-
the start of their vaccination programme
-
continued socialisation and handling
-
regular grooming and coat care introduction.
The first vaccinations help protect kittens against common feline illnesses such as feline panleukopenia and cat flu, and our kittens also begin their Feline Leukaemia vaccination as part of their preventative health care.
During this stage kittens are confident, playful and curious, continuing to develop their personalities and social skills.
Weeks 11–12 – Preparing for the Next Chapter
As the kittens approach twelve weeks of age, we begin preparing them for the next stage of their lives.
At Townhill this includes:
-
veterinary health checks
-
vaccinations
-
continued socialisation and handling
-
careful monitoring of development and behaviour.
By this stage the kittens are confident young Maine Coons with well-developed social skills.
Weeks 13–16 – Ready for Their Forever Families
By the time our kittens are ready to leave Townhill, they have had weeks of careful development, socialisation and preparation.
Before leaving, our kittens:
-
receive their final vaccinations
-
are microchipped
-
are neutered
-
have been gently introduced to grooming and handling
-
are confident in a home environment.
Our goal is always to ensure each kitten leaves:
-
confident and well socialised
-
healthy and thriving
-
prepared for life in their new home.
Watching them grow from tiny newborn kittens into confident young Maine Coons ready for their families is one of the most rewarding parts of responsible breeding.

Maine Coon kittens develop slightly more slowly than many other breeds. Their large size and gentle temperament are the result of careful breeding and steady development during their early weeks of life.
This is why responsible breeders carefully monitor Maine Coon kitten growth, weight and development milestones throughout the early stages of life.
