why we neuter our kittens before they leave
At Townhill, we have made the decision that our kittens leave us already neutered. This helps ensure a smooth, stress-free transition into their new homes and allows each kitten to start family life settled, healthy, and cared for.
Our approach is welfare-led, vet-guided, and tailored to the Maine Coon breed.
Male and Female Recovery
Neutering differs between males and females.
Male kittens usually recover very quickly. Female kittens undergo a more involved procedure and remain with us longer after surgery so we can ensure they are fully healed and comfortable before leaving.
No kitten leaves us while still recovering.
Growth and Size
Neutering does not prevent a Maine Coon from reaching their natural adult size. Research shows that genetics, nutrition, and overall health determine growth — not neutering. When carried out appropriately, early neutering does not negatively affect bone development or long-term wellbeing.
Evidence and Guidance
Veterinary research does not support the idea that early neutering stunts growth in cats. A review of studies published in veterinary journals — including long-term outcomes following early-age neutering — concluded that neutering before the traditional age did not negatively impact physical development in cats and does not stunt growth when carried out responsibly. Early neutering has been widely used in animal welfare programmes with no increased developmental risks documented, and its health and behavioural effects are comparable to those of later neutering. In some studies, neutered kittens actually grow to be heavier with greater lean mass and body size than intact kittens when nutrition and condition are properly managed, showing that neutering itself does not cause smaller adult size.
For slow-maturing breeds such as the Maine Coon, genetics, nutrition, and overall welfare play a far greater role in determining adult size than neutering age.
Why This Matters for Families
Neutering before leaving means no extra vet visits, no recovery care in a new home, and no risk of early hormone-related behaviours. Your kitten comes home ready to settle in and simply be a companion.
We’re always happy to talk this through and answer any questions.
