why we neuter our kittens before they leave
At Townhill, we have made the decision that our kittens leave us already neutered. This helps ensure a smooth, stress-free transition into their new homes and allows each kitten to start family life settled, healthy, and cared for.
Our approach is welfare-led, vet-guided, and tailored to the Maine Coon breed.
Weight, Not Age
Maine Coons mature slowly, so neutering is based on reaching a safe and appropriate weight rather than age. Each kitten is assessed individually by our vet and neutered only when they are ready.
Kittens leave when they are ready — not to a fixed timetable.
Male and Female Recovery
Neutering differs between males and females.
Male kittens usually recover very quickly. Female kittens undergo a more involved procedure and remain with us longer after surgery so we can ensure they are fully healed and comfortable before leaving.
No kitten leaves us while still recovering.
Growth and Size
Neutering does not prevent a Maine Coon from reaching their natural adult size. Research shows that genetics, nutrition, and overall health determine growth — not neutering. When carried out appropriately, early neutering does not negatively affect bone development or long-term wellbeing.
Evidence and Guidance
Veterinary studies, including research published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, have found no increased health or developmental risks in cats neutered early when compared with those neutered later, provided surgery is carried out responsibly and at an appropriate weight.
Why This Matters for Families
Neutering before leaving means no extra vet visits, no recovery care in a new home, and no risk of early hormone-related behaviours. Your kitten comes home ready to settle in and simply be a companion.
We’re always happy to talk this through and answer any questions.
